When I was done turning this photograph into the image you see here, there was this catch of breath that went beyond me thinking it looked okay.
It moved and calmed me. It made me fall back in love with the simple act of creating.
How big a deal is that?
Well, the past few months have been a fury of art events, from exhibitions to conferences to fighting with my next book which has been putting up serious resistance in my writing of it along with all the stresses that come from work, love and a lack of sleep and play.
This image was created in moments of quiet rebellion from “what I should have been doing”.
I call it “Be. Still.” based on an old song I never released of the same name. I like how the words can either be a mantra for stillness of motion or to simply remain being.
For me, it was about continuing to simply ‘be’. For the idea that’s been so long in the making to actually start to form in reality.
It changed my mindset from the fight and WORK that creating art has felt like the past couple of months, to PLAY, as my friend and creative inspiration Melissa Dinwiddie would call it. It was a large part of a catalyst that opened up the story lines of my next “The Gospel of Wolves” book which has had at least a dozen false starts.
But that engine is starting to purr again. The one thing I think I got right in my process for the first book was I always knew the motivations of even the minor characters which really helped me layer the long goal struggles between the major heroes and villains.
I’ve finally got that kind of hold on what happens next and yes, this next book will come with more complimentary flash fictions, collectible Storymarks, fine art released in-character (you do remember Lindsey is an artist, right?) and a soundtrack that will allow you to hear the songs you read about in the book.
This little breakthrough has been in the making since about 2010, not just creating characters and their requisite plot lines for the books and flash fictions, but testing and evaluating the technology that would get us to where we’re about to go.
In September, I’ll be opening a free (temporarily) membership on my website that will give you access to special behind the process videos, blog posts and access to demos of the music as I write the next book and create new content. (I doubt there’ll be spoilers, but if there are, I’ll warn you before you get to that content so you know.)
Did you know I’ve been buying vocal tracks and other sound elements over the past three years to enable me to create music in character? The sound elements will account for some of the different music producer’s styles and for vocals, Tessa Carrillo and Torscha Lane will be represented on at least a dozen songs.
If you’ve been following along in the extended world of The Gospel of Wolves, you might have already heard one example of this on the retro funk flavored song, “Am I Alone?” by the fictional rapper Sig Alert featuring the Torscha Lane.
Speaking of Torscha, you might remember reading about her snitching in a different song in the Gloon Flash Fictions I released online. Torscha’s vocals are one example of my vocal purchases and how I wrote and produced a recording to compliment how I envisioned her character as an artist.
The point is, this storyworld I created is VERY deep. I’m taking the rest of this year to gather ALL of the Flash Fictions, music and package it in an easy to use library that will allow you as a Ranger, to read, listen and dive into this world in the order the stories were meant to be read in.
Or you can jump around. Your choice.
Oh yeah, you’ll also be able to mark the stories you’ve read; art you’ve seen and songs you’ve listened to and favorite the ones you want to return to. Yes, you’ll be able to download and keep the music as part of the membership with none of that digital security crap getting in the way.
Can you see why this isn’t staying free?
I’m way out on a limb on this and there will be a few growing pains as I initially put this together, but I’m hoping you’ll join me anyhow.
I’m calling this membership “Ranger“. Why? Because I know from the start that this isn’t for everybody, but all of these things I’ve been creating is something I need to do to fulfill my vision of who I want to be as a writer and creator in general.
I believe there are a few who will enjoy plunging this deep into The Wilderness Saga story world in spite of it not being the ‘in’ thing to do. Since this is uncharted territory, I consider them kind of an elite class of reader.
Sooooo…if you’re really adventurous, you can join when I open the gates next month and as I continue to build this thing, you can not only watch as I build this thing…
…You can comment and help me shape it into a place you’ll want to return to.
If you only like to read the books, no worries, you’ll occasionally come across these names in Season One’s books of The Gospel of Wolves. Season Two, a few of them will break out in greater detail.
When this happens, the Rangers will already be pretty familiar with who they are, what they sound like, and in cases like Torscha Lane, Gloon, Gaelle Miranda Hirsch and Peter Behrendt, the Rangers will even know what they look like.
While this isn’t all of my news, it’s a big chunk of it.
Stay tuned for more in the coming months, but before I go, I need to say…
Don’t just hold on to those big and ambitious dreams. Keep at them, even when they’re trying to push away.
Look for this symbol next month either in the email or my website to join!
