Have you ever driven past a city or town and wondered about the people who live there?
I’ve had that sense of wonder as long as I could remember. Even as a small child, I used to wonder who lived at the end of the freeway. What was their city like? How did they decorate their homes? What did the kids there do for fun?
I would imagine their daily lives. What their mornings would look like and if the family all sat around the table together for dinner.
For my fictional stories, I get to bring this same sense of imagination to the page and the newest of these creations for me is the fictional town of Minikin.
I based the look of the town on the Fairplex Garden Railroad using pictures I took of it with my cell phone while my wife and I were at the Los Angeles County Fair in September of 2019.
From the photos, I’m stitching the layout of the city together and based on that, figured out where it needs to show up on a map of California. One of the major factors in figuring this out was the prominence of trains. How those trains will factor into the story world is not entirely clear yet, but I have years of train history for inspiration ranging from their role in expanding the territory of the United States to how they were used in Europe leading up to and during the second World War.
For the purposes of The Gospel of Wolves however, its the town itself rather than the trains that will play the biggest factor in the story.
I’ve situated Minikin just off of the 15 Freeway in the place where the city of Keenbrook resides.
Here’s a Google Earth map of the area I’m referring to (continue reading below graphic):
The name Minikin is a play on words since it’s definition is: a person or object that is delicate, dainty, or diminutive.
It’s a place that will turn up, not just in The Gospel of Wolves, but in other stories as well and has the potential to be anything but, small and diminutive in the grand scheme of things.
All in all, it’s definitely shifted how I approach the part of the story it appears in because of the character of the people my imagination is placing as its populace, but those facts contain spoilers, so I’ll reveal those shifts once the story is completed.
