Those are the words that prompted me to create the image you see above.
If those words hadn’t been uttered immediately after taking the photo with my cell phone, I would have deleted the original photo and not thought twice about it.
But I kind of felt obligated to do SOMETHING with the photo because I didn’t want to come back and say, “Well the picture sucked, so I deleted it.”
Sometimes, as an artist, you have to keep your opinion of your work to yourself.
So I put it on my computer and after a few minutes of cursing myself, the green light that made me feel like I needed to hurry across the street and the sun for making it fairly impossible to see what I really captured…
…I got to work.
I’ve been asked what my process is, and this photo is a perfect example of my answer.
What I do with an image depends on how the image makes me feel.
In this case…
But I stuck with it because I felt obligated.
Eventually, I pushed through and conjured something that didn’t offend me. Sometimes as an artist, you have to let people know how you feel about your work.
After I felt like I was finished with the piece, I was suddenly glad that I was put on the spot, because the aesthetic in the final piece is a new one for me. I’ve never gone in this direction before and maybe never would have if not for that unexpected push.
If you have a similar experience or artistic endeavor where you found yourself in some new place only because some one or thing prodded you into it, please share it with me.
I’d love to see what you did with it.
