Now That I Have What I Need

April 21, 2019 by Christopher J Wesley Leave a Comment

When I decided back as a teenager that I was going to be a rock star lead guitarist, beneath the obvious perks and attractions  was the idea that it would make it easier to build the kind of relationships I was looking for.

The fact that I didn’t gain that rockstar status but still managed to build the relationships I was looking for is one of those examples of getting what I need rather than what I wanted.

Today, I’ve spent 45 unplanned minutes writing on my next book and delivered art to the Alkebulan Cultural Center for next week’s art reception, so it hasn’t been a day off per se.

But along with the work, has been a some time spent just acknowledging how far I’ve come and how much I’ve turned the life around for a kid who radiated major depression by the age of eight.

They say you never forget your first love.

FA-Print-BloomPeople clapping and cheering for a song about molestation? Here’s how that happened.

I once had this girlfriend who would bring me as her date to the kind of dinner parties where the homeowner had a piano and at some part of the evening the host and guests would crowd around it while those of us who played the instrument took turns on it.

The Perks of Being an Abused Child

While I don’t condone abuse, I do believe that if you’re subjected to it, you need to first remove yourself from the situation and from there, find the benefits from what you’ve endured.

I know this sounds crazy, but humor me for now and consider some of the ways I’ve re-framed some of my own traumatic experiences.

Perhaps you can relate to a few of them and hopefully, you’ll be able to re-frame some of them yourself.  [Read more…]

The Fight For A Lifetime

February 9, 2013 by Chris Wesley Leave a Comment

fight-for-lightThe town’s preacher had taken a switch to my dad once. I don’t know how old my dad was at the time, but I do know that my grandmother hadn’t come to that knowledge long before she was banging on the preacher’s door.

“…but nobody answered it,” My grandmother told my sister and I one day while she adjusted her wiry 5 foot 2 frame in her arm chair to mime in motion what she was about to describe, “so I went around back and started banging on that door until the preacher’s wife came looking out through the screen, telling me that he wasn’t home.”
